In terms of Hip-Hop albums that have completely landed like a tsunami, Clipse’s new LP Let God Sort Em Out is already speculated to be one of the albums of the year. The Virginia natives and siblings Pusha T and Malice have joined forces after 15 plus years of not recording an album together. To add the cherry on top, the production is fully handled by childhood friend Pharrell Williams. With tracks like ‘Ace Trumpets’ and ‘So Be It’ already running through the system like a storming bull in Spain, the one track that everyone was teased with was ‘Chains & Whips’ featuring Kendrick Lamar. Lamar’s “controversial” feature would be the factor that made Clipse leave Def Jam and sign to Roc Nation due to the former label wanting Kendrick’s verse to be removed. Standing on principle, Clipse refused, and the rest is history. Not only have they released the song as their new single but they also shot a video for it.
Directed by Gabriel Moses, the haunting yet highly cinematic visuals perfectly accompany the dark, sinister track itself. There are loads of symbolisms throughout that video which not only highlights the ill relationship between the African American community and America itself, but also shows the incredible diversity of black culture. Powerful is the word to describe ‘Chains & Whips’. Check it out.
