Adam Scrimshire and Dave Koor come from a lineage of trailblazers constantly pushing music forward, stylistically embedding sounds ranging from jazz, soul, broken beat, house and more. Both having been long time key fixtures in the London scene, their 2016 debut release ‘Modifications: Set 1’ under the group name Modified Man was a flawless piece of work, championed by various taste makers, as well as a reminder that in this day and age there are still musicians who can create timeless music through the use of analog gear. Boldly returning with Modifications: Set 2, Modified Man yet again shine with sheer sophistication.

Comprised of six tracks, the release kicks in with ‘Vanilla Gorilla’, an upbeat and glistening future jazz handing that tightly knots the dance floor element to forward-thinking orchestration. While the song plays over 8 minutes in time, you still find yourself longing for just a little more. ‘Kingswood Drive’ incorporates a funk-geared bass line to melodic cosmic soul production, dreamy and rich whilst ‘Croydon Rooftop Cafe Culture’ exemplifies the essence of the broken beat sound at it’s finest, with shining moments of Bob James-like magic on the keys. ‘Prints On The Heath’ is an aquatic head-nodding feast with ‘Accidental Return’ jumping back into a broken beat spacing of futurism. The release is rounded out with the epic ‘Thorns’ which strikes with a synth-heavy fury, powered by running drums all harmoniously reaching climatic heights.

Whilst Adam Scrimshire and Dave Koor are clearly highly skilled musicians and producers, Modifications: Set 2 is a record that highlights their tight craftsmanship without coming off as snobbish. This is clearly about the music which translates brilliantly to the listener. Connecting with South London artist Tim Easley who designed the cover, also conveys the visual importance of how Scrimshire and Koor want the music to be presented. Overall this is another bullseye hit marking delivered by some of the most cutting edge artists in music.
