Upon first listening to Montreal group Thus Owl’s new single ‘Turn Up The Volumes’, you’re quickly caught in the clutches of what sounds more like an epic, cinematic journey than simply an alternative recording. From the jump, scattering synths lash around you, as the vocals Erika Angell are accompanied by haunting strings and a thumping bass line. Thus Owls have surely figured out the idea of knowing when to scale back for space and slowly filling the surroundings with sounds that completely keeps you wondering what’s about to happen next. Astonishingly arranged, ‘Turn Up The Volumes’ is the lead single taken from their forthcoming EP Black Matter, out November 6th on Secret City Records.
In regards to ‘Turn Up The Volumes’ Thus Owls wrote:
“We always heard this “swinging” cymbal in our minds when thinking of the arrangements for this tune and that’s how we ended up thinking of Liam O’Neill for the drums. His timber and tone was what we always imagined. This song is about standing fast in your choice and doing what you have to do even though it might be hard, and even though you have to leave some things behind. This song is indigo.”
