After coming up for air from the Boxing Day extravaganza that saw Loco Dice, Apollonia, Shadow Child and Robert Dietz help work off the Christmas excesses we now step boldly into 2014 with a special New Years Day event. Yousef will be touring Australasia, but he leaves the club in very capable hands and has once again crafted a line of up epic proportions covering the full spectrum of authentic and emotive House and Techno presented by the worlds finest exponents, Jamie Jones, Carl Craig, Nic Fanciulli, Jesse Rose and Detroit Swindle, supported by residents Lewis Boardman and Scott Lewis.

Jamie Jones is of the hottest properties in UDM, currently voted #1 DJ in the RA poll of 2012, bending genres via his Hot Natured live act and pioneering label, Hot Creations, his ‘Paradise’ events at DC10, Ibiza plus a DJ schedule that has taken in every major city around the world. Regarded as an audio revolutionary, he has been instrumental in creating an iconic sound based on warm, lush melodies entwined with the deeper side of Techno reminiscent of pioneering Larry Heard et al productions. Jamie’s discography includes the tripped out anthem ‘Summertime’ on Crosstown Rebels, a stunning rework of Azarii and Ill’s ‘Hungary for the Power’, which was perhaps one of the key summer release in Ibiza 2011. Jamie has performed at major festivals and esteemed night clubs all overt the world including Glastonbury, Tomorrow Land, Burning Man, Warung, Fabric and Womb.

Next up – one of Techno’s true innovators and pioneering ambassadors, Carl Craig. Described as “a creative visionary, an electronic music icon, an esteemed Grammy-nominated composer, a world class DJ and an ambassador for his native Detroit”, what Carl has contributed to the electronic dance music community is second to only very few others in the higher echelons. The creator and director of seminal labels Retroactive and Planet E, he has been a guiding light and influence for many artists on the electronic music scene including Underworld, Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem, not forgetting his own hugely influential releases such as Bug In Bassbin and Throw under his Paperclip People guise. His 2012 remix of Agoria’s ‘Speechless’ is also revered by many today. A true citizen of Detroit, his contribution to the city via his involvement in the D.E.M.F plus his not for profit work including setting up music scholarships for inner city Detroit children has placed Carl in the higher reaches of electronic music grand masters. Craig says about Detroit, “My commitment to the city is like a commitment to your family. I’ve been here all my life and I’ve seen great things happen elsewhere, why not be involved in making my home great?”

Joining the musical melee is Nic Fanciulli a firmly established global DJ and producer for well over a decade, Nic has been working with artists as diverse as U.N.C.L.E, Loco Dice, Josh Wink and Tracy Thorn. Adding another string to his bow via his Saved label which has been running for 5+ years and has quickly become an important purveyor on the international, underground House and Techno scene, drawing similarities to Yousef’s own Circus imprint. Saved is a home to established artists like Dan Curtain and &ME.

Sitting somewhere in between the teutonic Techno of Carl Craig and the warm, underground sounds of Jamie Jones sits our next guest and old friend of Circus, Jesse Rose. UK born and bred, Jesses blend of Chi-Town inspired House and Detroit Motor City Techno has become his hall mark and translates into the outputs on his labels, Made to Play and Front Room Recordings. Tracks like ‘Time Is But A Moment’ and ‘Not Hit Enough’ showcase Jesses own idiosyncratic production style of deep, hypnotic groove fuelled dance floor offerings. His DJing has taken him around the globe including slots at clubs such as Fabric, Basics, and Panorama Bar.

If Marvin Gaye made House music their biggest fans would be Detroit Swindle. Netherlands born and breed producers, steeped in a solid upbringing of Motown-soul, Funk, Hip Hop and Jazz with heavy extras of Detroit inspired Deep House have fuelled both Lara and Maarten to create outputs for Jimpster’s Freerange label that have been supported by Laurent Garnier and Eats Everything to name check only a few. Their DJing has taken them to key global clubs such as Panorama Bar and Tresor. Circus Boxing Day will be their Liverpool and Circus debuts.

Circus’ two residents, Lewis Boardman and Scott Lewis, complete the lineup, bringing their mature stance into invigorating House music to the East Village Arts Club.
