Wen “Commotion” EP

The Keysound Recordings label is the perfect platform for unfiltered and raw music that represents the grit of inner city London. One of the big releases from the label this month is Wen’s “Commotion” EP, a four song collection of nocturnal pictured, bass heavy tunes that falls in between organic grime and dubstep. “Commotion”, with it’s brutal bass line and eerie synth, brings the listener back to the grime glory of days circa 2003-04 where emcees swung it out and painted a darker picture of UK streets. Tracks such as “Night Crawler” and “Spark It” are ongoing beat downs of deep, sub low sonics with vocals of grime artists weaved in and out that sounds more like blatant audible dares. “Road” is the final punch as chopped samples of ‘road talk’ by Trim are splashed over dark and intense minimalism. While many grime artists have moved on to lighter, radio friendlier songs with hopes of hitting the charts, “Commotion” is the perfect record for those, like many of us, who never tire of the punchy and grimier side of British music.
