London-based Valentina has released her new EP You Know Where My Happiness Went. Self-produced, the 5-track record is a collection of lo-fi electronica and experimental pop pieces that find the singer delivering beautiful and airy vocals over the spacious rhythms. Inspired by the ending of a relationship, the result is a moody yet luscious atmospheric soundscape filled with raw emotion.
Regarding the EP, Valentina mentioned:
“These songs were written and recorded alone, predominantly in the middle of the night, over the course of a messy on/off relationship that followed the break up from a long-term partner. One of the songs ‘Violet Sky’ was written the night I’d been dumped whilst my ex slept in my bed in the next room. He said the line that became the chorus and I couldn’t get it out of my head. How can you not want to lose someone and also be breaking up with them? It seemed like the cruelest thing you could say.
All of the lyrics came out this way, I never wrote them down, it was mainly a stream of consciousness, half asleep and not really caring. I wanted to retain that immediate sensation, to not constantly be searching for perfection.
I’ve suffered from insomnia most of my life and the period of time writing these songs made it feel like it was something that could be constructive that was just a part of me.”
