Stream the ‘Soil Samples’ EP

Soil Samples is a project commissioned by Bowel Research UK, which fosters an emphasis on the importance of soil microbiome and it’s healthy relationship to the human body. GAS Music captured the sounds of organic soil at Glebelands Organic Farm in Manchester, next processing it to audible frequencies. The sounds were then handed to Derrick McKenzie (of Jamiroquai), MFS Records’ Mark Reeder, Nehemiah, and The Family Baloo to create a musical soundscape in the form of this new record.

From chilled disco to deep techno, Soil Samples is the expansion of electronica, connecting it to something that is right under our feet, literally – the earth.

Along with a digital release, Soil Samples will get pressed on limited edition vinyl which includes a plantable insert embedded with microbiome seeds.

Touching on the project, Derrick McKenzie said:

“The concept alone had me hooked—turning the sounds of soil into music was incredible. Straight away, I thought of disco-funk vibes, blending organic textures with groove. It wasn’t easy, but creating something so unique was an amazing experience.”

Mark Reeder added:

“When Gary Hilton from GAS approached me with this project, I was fascinated. Everything has resonance—why not soil? By amplifying its sounds and transforming them, we’ve brought the unseen world of the earth to the dancefloor.”
