Phanélie Classic Reggae Mix

Hometown: Lyon, France

Bio: Phanélie has been involved in the reggae scene of France since the late nineties. Having gone to her first reggae concert at the age of 15, shortly afterward she began to get involved in every aspect of reggae promoting…from selling tickets at sound systems to getting artists from Jamaica to perform jingles for a friend’s radio show.

In 2004, Phanélie started a reggae radio show titled “Aux Armes” (the title of the reggae version of the French national anthem that was done by French musician Serge Gainsbourg) on Radio Canut in Lyon. The show, which ran for almost six years, every sunday from 3-4pm, showcased the diverse sounds of reggae coming from not only Jamaica but also globally. With influential sounds stemming from a highly politicized period of music in Jamaica, she also focused on the messages of awareness within reggae. “To me, reggae music is nothing without the political and social messages it brings, so I listen to a lot of records from the 70’s of Jamaica”-Phanélie. After doing the show for a while and having done promotions in the reggae scene in France for a number of years, Phanélie and a friend took the next step forward and created a local sound system called “Aux Armes Sound”. Keeping the spirit of the show, the reggae hostess found herself DJing at reggae concerts and established a residency at a venue in Lyon with two other sound systems. “Aux Armes” radio show ended due to Phanélie and her show partner moving out of the city of Lyon.

Having returned to Lyon, Phanélie is preparing to launch another reggae radio show as well as website dealing in reggae music and promotions.
