Enlisted on the 2014 New Year Honours List, dance music ambassador Pete Tong was recently awarded an MBE for his services to music and broadcasting.
Pete Tong wrote on his Facebook page, “I’m very proud to be awarded an MBE for services to Music & Broadcasting! I’d like to thank everyone who has supported Dance and Electronic music over the past 2 decades, Happy New Year and here’s to more great music and events in 2014!”
The Kent born DJ, presenter, and producer began his radio career over 30 years ago, starting at the pirate station Radio Invicta 92.4 in London. Tong eventually moved on to BBC Radio 1 in 1981 to host a dance feature slot on Peter Powell’s show. However, after jumping around between stations such as Invicta and Capitol Radio, he returned to BBC Radio 1 in the early 90s, presenting the “Essential Selection”.
Aside from a continuing radio career, Pete Tong’s also founded FFRR Records, as well as resided at some of the most successful venues in Ibiza including Pacha and Eden.
Pete Tong’s latest venture is with the U.S. online station iHeartRadio’s “Evolution”, owned by Clear Channel. Dedicated to electronic music, “Evolution” is now broadcasted on Boston’s WEDX 101.7 FM.
