UK legend MJ Cole has released his new album MJ Cole presents Madrugada. Comprised of 12 songs in total, the LP was recorded with violinist and arranger Tobie Tripp, as well as a 14-piece orchestra. Crafting absolutely gorgeous piano-led compositions, the record highlights the producer and musician’s ability to step into spaces of classical and jazz whilst still taking the listener on a cosmic voyage, something that he has effortlessly done throughout the years. MJ Cole presents Madrugada is out via Decca Records.
MJ Cole has also unveiled a short film to coincide with the LP. Directed by Henry Dean and shot in Kiev, the stunning imagery depicts the lives of various people who work during the wee hours of the night and morning, with the film also touching on the subject of isolation.
Touching on the album, MJ Cole stated:
“I’ve made hundreds of records and had albums out before, but this record has always been brewing in the background. It’s been gestating my whole life – but the execution of it has been very quick. I really feel like a new artist. This isn’t just me sitting down at the piano and writing something nice and ambient, I’m coming at it as a hardcore manipulator of sounds. You can hear my breath, you can hear the pedal, you can hear the piano as a living instrument. It’s all about expression. When I play the piano I go into a meditative state, other thoughts don’t come into my head.”
