London-based singer Maryon is an artist who by many standards would be considered a destined star. Blessed with an amazing voice, incredible songwriting skills, showmanship and marketability, her will and drive is unstoppable, making her surely one of the emerging acts of 2021 poised for musical domination.

Born in Calarasi, Moldova, Maryon’s journey into music began at the age of 11 having watched Madonna perform ‘Hung Up’ on MTV. That was the inspiration that immediately made Maryon want to drive down a path of performing. Yet whilst her ambition might have been there, Maryon’s parents didn’t quite approve, wanting her to find other ways to occupy her time. However, the willingness to do music made Maryon convince her grandmother to pay for singing lessons for her. From there after, she would constantly play various gigs including carnival in Venice. By the time she turned 18, Maryon left Italy to study languages in London, yet she instantly changed her degree course to music.

In 2017, Maryon released her debut single ‘YOU’. A massive pop cut, the song was a bright indication of what she was capable of delivering. Eventually Maryon would go on to work with the likes of none other than Afrojack and Tiësto, as well as Martin Jensen and Roars. In January of 2021, Maryon dropped her fire blazing song ‘Hustler’, which seemed very appropriate for someone with her attributes and determination.

Maryon has once again stepped forth with a killer track entitled ‘Flatline’ which has an anthem-like appeal, with the singer delivering brilliant vocal work like a seasoned veteran. While Maryon may be at the beginning stages of career, it looks like it will undoubtedly be a long and successful one.

I read that growing up your parents didn’t really want you to concentrate on music. What were their ambitions for you?

Maryon – My parents always thought I should follow a different path from music. They used to say music was a risky business and that I should become a language teacher or translator.

Madonna was a big inspiration for you in terms of you wanting to be a singer and artist. What was it specifically about Madonna that sparked that fire in you to want to pursue music?

Maryon – I started singing after watching ‘Hung Up’ on MTV. I think it was a combination of her energetic performance, the impeccable voice and the super catchy song.

You are equally as good as a songwriter as a singer. I would imagine that you were quite the gifted writer as a youth. Do you remember the first song that you wrote and when did you have a confident knowing that this was something that you were great at?

Maryon – The first song I’ve written is actually my first ever release! The track is on Spotify and it’s called ‘YOU’. I was in Italy when I realised music was some kind of obsession and I remember not knowing how to play the guitar but watching videos on YouTube and that’s how it all started.

You eventually came to London for university. Upon arriving, did you immediately immerse yourself into the music scene? What was that initial experience like when you first moved to London?

Maryon – When I came to London I knew no one nor had any connections in the music industry. It was very tough at first but choosing a music degree helped the process. It gave me the confidence to go out in London and find musicians/songwriters and producers to collaborate with.

You’ve worked with both Afrojack and Tiësto. How did those connections come about and what was it like to be creating with two extremely huge acts such as those two?

Maryon – Those were definitely 2 incredible experiences. I’m a huge fan of both and an opportunity came up through my management to collaborate so jumped at the opportunity! I hope to be be working with them more in the future.

Back in 2017 you dropped the song ‘You’. It’s quite a big record from the production to the vocals. Can you talk about the process of working on that song?

Maryon – It’s always funny to talk about the first song I’ve ever written. I wrote ‘YOU’ in my bedroom in Italy and didn’t know how to produce so I shared one of my singing videos on a Facebook page and a producer from Toronto got in touch. We immediately hit it off and started working on the song and that’s how it happened!

Your track ‘Hustler’ is a sort ode to trusting and believing in yourself opposed to someone else’s criticisms of you. What inspired that song?

Maryon – ‘Hustler’ is about how tough sometimes it can be when you are a woman in the music industry, facing all kinds of challenges. It is an empowering anthem that I wrote to inspire women to go after what they want at all times and never give up on their dreams.

With your latest single ‘Flatline’, it feels like you’ve raised the levels even more, delivering incredible vocal work, infectious melodies and brilliant instrumentation. Is the song based on a personal experience and does writing records like these help you with the process of moving on?

Maryon – The song is based on a very emotional and tough break up I’ve experienced last year. I struggled to move on for months but writing a record that reminded me to do that was very powerful for me. It was super therapeutic.

Finally, can you tell us what’s forthcoming in the near future?

Maryon – I am very excited to be releasing more music in the next few months. There’s going to be few surprises too. I am currently working on finishing up the next record and doing photoshoots!
