Already having ties to the theatrical piece Ubu which ran at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London band Famous make a wave of a splash with their new mini-album ‘England’.
A roller coaster ride of post-punk, new wave and art-pop, krautrock and more, the six-track record is theatre in itself with vocalist Jack Merrett delivering bold performances reminiscent of the likes of Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and even elements of Mark E. Smith of The Fall. You can also hear influences of David Bowie swirling around England. The production is lively and vibrant with moments of low key haze like a smokey pub in the East End. Merrett’s ability to keep listeners engaged with clever writing and storytelling, England is a brilliant bridging of classicism and modernity, which is not only exciting but needed.
