Canadian producer and DJ Kenny Glasgow was already a mainstay in the music scene of Toronto. Completely kicking in the international doors as a member of Art Department along with Jonny White, the pair went on to take the electronic world by storm. After dropping a number of solo recordings stemming back to 2008, Glasgow now unleashes his new LP Circus Tales.
Although not forgetting the dance floor, it’s clear that the aim for the new work was about delivering a complete album varied in not only sound but mood. ‘Interactive Entertainment’, dark and haunting, is the welcome sign into Glasgow’s mystery house. ‘Come on’ seems to level out the intensity yet doesn’t drop the feel as stabbing synths dance around one repeating trance-like vocal sample. By the reaching of ‘Everything is Breath’, the ride begins to transform into an all-out mind trip with sticking electronic arrangements playing like waves into a futuristic sci-fi film. However, Glasgow knows the exact moment when to bring the tempo into more upbeat and dance-friendly territory, which is displayed in cuts like ‘Communication’. Indeed there is a nocturnal overtone splashed throughout the LP, yet Kenny Glasgow’s genius is his awareness to keep the listener’s attention with subtle shifts and additives planted in each cut.
Circus Tales is not your typical 4×4-led dance album, but more like ritual music for the club. Certainly one of the better records of 2016 for electronica, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to imagine it gunning for best of the year. Kenny Glasgow has masterfully executed a release that is unquestionably engaging, hypnotic and grooving.
Circus Tales is out on No. 19 Music.
