Jack White is having a busy 2022. The Detroit native released his critically acclaimed fourth studio album Fear of the Dawn in April of this year. Pushing the boundaries musically, the highly experimental record helped to further catapult White into rock god status with the Third Man label boss appearing on multiple magazine covers, talk shows, you name it. Although Jack White could have easily rode out the album for quite a long duration of time, he has released his second LP of the year titled Entering Heaven Alive.
Entering Heaven Alive finds Jack White being more of a traditionalist, highlighting his incredible versatility as a musician. There is the electrifying psych/indie offerings, jazz-influenced cuts, country dabs, funk, and even whimsical Baroque-pop. On paper the cramming of this many styles can almost be a train wreck waiting to happen, however, White skilfully arranges everything like perfect pieces to a puzzle, making each tune cohesive, digestible, and ultimately entertaining. There are quite a number of love songs on the record, however, Jack White’s clever songwriting and storytelling finesse locks you in from start to finish without the tracks sounding cheesy or stale. There is even a reworking of ‘Taking Me Back’ which was featured on the prior album. If Fear of the Dawn was the vision of how far music can stretch sonically, Entering Heaven Alive is the historical rooting of where it all comes from.
Entering Heaven Alive is out now on Third Man Records.
