DJ Rashad Passes Away

Chicago footwork pioneer and fixture DJ Rashad has sadly passed away Saturday, April 26th.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Rashad’s body was found dead in an apartment on West 21st Street in the city’s West Side according to the Chicago Police Department.

Although an autopsy is scheduled for Sunday, April 27th, police allegedly found drug paraphernalia and narcotics near Rashad’s body.

Tweets of condolences poured in by friends and fans of DJ Rashad. Detroit’s DJ Godfather tweeted “R.I.P. to my long time friend DJ Rashad. Great friend & producer. I loved all the music we released over the years. U will be missed!” Chicago’s Chance the Rapper also sent tweets expressing his thoughts on the situation by writing “Music lost a legend today. And he was my friend. Love you DJ Rashad. RIP”.

Born Rashad Harden, the Chicago native was a spearhead of footwork, a combination of energetic dance and house music ranging at around 160bpm, derived from the style known as juke.

DJ Rashad’s discography includes “Juke It From Behind”, “Itz Not Rite” released on Planet Mu, as well as “Double Cup”, released in 2013 on Hyperdub.

Harden was 35 years old at the time of his death.
