Comprised of Swedish-Canadian couple Simon and Erika Angell, Montreal-based Thus Owls are one of the most exciting bands in music today. Skillfully crafting rhythms that blend alt-rock, post-classical, punk, noise, folk, jazz and pop, all meshed into their distinct and cinematic sound, Thus Owls’ recordings are like pieces of art that jump straight off of the canvas, landing directly into your psyche.

Having previously played with separate groups (Simon as a member of Patrick Watson’s band and Erika playing with Loney Dear), their meeting in Amsterdam back in 2007 brought the two together through a like-mindedness of music and a budding love. After the two were eventually married, they formed Thus Owls, recording their 2009 LP Cardiac Malformations and the 2011 album Harbours in Erika’s native country of Sweden. Upon Erika relocating to Montreal in 2012, their stunning record Turning Rocks was released worldwide in 2014 on Secret City Records, which proved to be nothing short of scintillating. Their 2015 Black Matter EP finds Thus Owls delving deeper into experimentation of sound, giving birth to dramatic and atmospheric soundscapes that are completely breath-taking.

For ColoRising Mixes 18, Thus Owls curate a wonderland of art-rock, jazz, drone, noise, psychedelic and loads more. Moody and bold, the tracks land with impact and power yet remain reflective of the true beauty of what we call the art of music.
