Seminal electronic band Tangerine Dream founder Edgar Froese has sadly passed away at age 70. Announced via the band’s website, the causes of Froese’s death is attributed to complications pertaining to pulmonary embolism. Froese died in Vienna.

Born in 1944 in Tilst (now Sovetsk), which at the time was part of East of Prussia, Edgar Froese’s family fled to Berlin during World War II. He formed Tangerine Dream in 1967, releasing their debut album Electronic Meditation in 1970. Although the band recorded and released three more LPs between 1971 and 1973, it would be their fifth studio album, and first Virgin signed recording, entitled Phaedra, that would launch the band into the mainstream. Using the Moog sequencer throughout the album, Phaedra is considered one of the most influential works in electronic music.

Pertaining to the death of Edgar Froese, a post on Tangerine Dream’s website was written, stating:

Dear Friends,

The sadness in our hearts is immensely.
