It’s no mystery that D’Angelo can be quite the illusive person. After all, after releasing his monumental album “Voodoo” back in 2000, the prolific artist literally disappeared for over a decade with the exception of resurfacing sporadically and often times with controversy. However, over the past year, D’Angelo begin performing around Europe and the States to selling out venue after venue. Recently, writer and tastemaker Nelson George interviewed D’Angelo for the Red Bull Music Academy Festival in New York City. D’Angelo talks about his musical influences and heritage growing up in Richmond, Virginia. Questlove, who is in the crowd supporting D’Angelo, comes on stage to tell the story of how they met, recording “Voodoo” and the ‘neo-soul’ term.
