Hot Coins is the project by Daniel Berman, known to many as Red Rack Em, in which the Nottingham based producer explores late 70’s to early 80’s dance music which consisted of sleazy disco, English goths, a Hip-Hop meets punk period, electro funk and more. The outcome is the dark and funky, danceable and slutty, gritty and glamourous album “The Damage is Done”. Sonically sounding like a soundtrack for late night club escapades turned sexcapades fueled by a drug and drink binge, the record’s brilliance comes not only from the musical aspect but also the lyrical content which highlights the results and consequences of die hard clubbing. “The Only Way” plays with a heavy, slow funk bass line and sharp synths that makes one think of late nights at New York’s infamous club The Roxy. “Leathered”, with it’s off beat, window steaming Italo meets Prince composition, is a listening stimulation that feels like you’re prone to hear pornographic screams and moans at any moment. With it’s darker club themes also comes the beautiful and surreal arrangements of tracks like “Roadtrip” that reflects a warmth and lighter period of the journey. “The Damage Is Done” is a magnificent record that brings a spotlight on what many people would consider the best timeline of club culture. The “anything goes” attitude left a permanent marking on the minds of those who were around to partake in the festivities. Even if you were not there, listening to this album definitely sparks the imagination.
Hot Coins “The Damage Is Done” is out 28 Jan. on Sonar Kollektiv.
