London-raised, Paris-based singer ALA.NI may not be old in age, but she has a soul that embodies that of an elder master. With a voice that, in itself, sounds like it is an alchemy of multiple decades, ALA.NI is an all-around artist whose blend of music and theatre is absolutely breath-taking.
Norwegian artist Jenny Hval has announced news on her forthcoming album 'The Practice of Love'. The LP is set to land September 13th on Sacred Bones. Comprised of 8-tracks, the record revolves around the idea of creating art and its relevance to life. The album follows Jenny Hval's 2016 LP 'Blood Bitch'.
Parisian trio NIKI NIKI have released their new EP 'Pretty Sunny Funny Walk'. Defying not only musical norms but social norms pertaining to gender and sexuality, the 4-track EP is a succulent taste of art pop, post-punk, electro and more. While many artists suffer from trying to pack such varied styles on one record, NIKI NIKI's classy touch and tasteful delivery make each song not only highly inviting but utterly irresistible. An enticing listen from start to finish, we're hoping that an album will follow sooner than later.
Last year Canadian artist Kitzl stepped up with her experimental art pop cut such as 'Armadilla'. She then followed-up the song with further boundary pushing tunes like 'GSF' and '40 moons'.
Paris-based trio NIKI NIKI may identify themselves as a pop group, but they are definitely unlike your typical crop of acts that are in the scene at the moment. Walking down the lane of more groundbreaking artists such as David Bowie, there latest single 'Pretty Sunny Funny Walk' meshes art pop with bass-rolling, almost experimental trap, topped with operatic vocal stylings.
Already having ties to the theatrical piece Ubu which ran at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London band Famous make a wave of a splash with their new mini-album 'England'. A roller coaster ride of post-punk, new wave and art-pop, krautrock and more, the six-track record is theatre in itself with vocalist Jack Merrett delivering bold performances reminiscent of the likes of Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and even elements of Mark E. Smith of The Fall. You can also hear influences of David Bowie swirling around 'England'.
Releasing her EP 'Moon' back in 2018, Los Angeles singer and actress Alison Sudol makes her return with a new single titled 'The Runner'. Opening the song with filtered, claustrophobic vocals, the track eventually progresses to a cinematic explosion of indie that plays like something from an adventurous film.
London-based Gazel is prepping for the release of her new album 'Gazel's Book Of Souls'. A conceptual record in which each track represents a particular Soul, her latest single 'You're Not Funny' is representative of a charlatan spiritual teacher. Musically the tune encompasses everything from haunting electronica and art pop. Gazel graces the track with ethereal melodies along with a spoken word delivery that commands the listener to concentrate on the narrative.
London band Hugh have delivered some pretty gorgeous tunes spanning the past few years. Whilst their 2017 LP 'Love, Hugh' elegantly blended sounds ranging from pop, soul, Hip-Hop, jazz-fused electronica and more, the band took a bit of a break throughout 2018. Making a grand return this year, the group's latest offering is the single 'Sober', which features vocalist and songwriter Amaroun. Atmospheric with the paired vocals of Amaroun and Hugh front man Josh Idehen fitting tightly like a hand in glove, the song is a beautiful and mesmeric recording that finds Hugh still at the top of their game.
A fixture in the Soho art and performance scene, London-based singer and musician Brudini has unveiled his new single titled 'Reflections'. Refusing to any limitations and restrictions of genre, musically Brudini delves into multiple sounds including psychedelic, art pop, funk and even a tad bit of Italo. Whilst on paper this combination could be a successful blend or an incredible miss, the result is a cinematic soundscape that is utterly refreshing and nostalgic in the same breath.
