Having made her musical rounds as a member of the Swedish post-punk band Terrible Feelings, Manuela Iwansson has now released her debut solo album titled Dark Tracks, which is out now on Lack of Sleep Records.
Comprised of ten songs in total, Dark Tracks finds Manuela Iwansson delving deeper into the sounds of new wave, a touch of synth-pop, as well as 70s style punk. Whilst the album’s content gives listeners a window into Iwansson’s overall world, the poetic lyricism of the tunes are utterly captivating and intriguing, surpassing your standard, run of the mill, songwriting that is typically spoon fed to the audience. This is definitely a musical treat with an air of nostalgia that plays in a fantastic way.
Touching on the album, Manuela Iwansson stated:
“The album is basically a portfolio of me. It is very much a debut album – a little rough around the edges at times, but made with a lot of heart. I put a lot of thoughts into the lyrics, and a lot of emotion into the melodies. At times I play around with words a lot, and I constantly want to improve my writing…The whole project is about 80s aesthetics with 70s punk vibes; grit, rain, cities at night, neon lights, trains, and cars, and movement; leather and lace and rock ānā roll. Nothing ever looks as good as a photo booth photo in black and white.”
