Germany has long had a reputation for bands and production teams pumping out extraordinary funk, nujazz and electronica, but Greece born, now Hamburg based artists Basement Freaks have covered all ground with their single “Soul Intoxication”, a record that features raw soul, polished space disco and pretty, spot on classic house. With the duo driving the original version down the path laid by soul singers such as Curtis Mayfield, the remixes are handled by Tom Drummond, Skaggs and Lonely Boy. Los Angeles based Skaggs’ hand clapping, stadium style funk contrasts brilliantly with the electrifying, space disco rework by fellow L.A. resident producer Lonely Boy. Australia’s Tom Drummond rounds off the release with an addicting, silky house bit that points to Daft Punk. Ultimately each version individually stands firmly on its own, earning the record high marks for quality. It’s recordings such as Basement Freaks’ “Soul Intoxication” that makes it exciting for not only DJs, but music lovers who want a one stop shop of musical goodness. Below is a preview of the release.
