From Wiley’s earlier eskimo sound to clashes in youth clubs to the spawning of household names like Dizzee Rascal, Tinie Tempah and Tinchy Styder, the genre of grime has not only undergone various transformations but as showcased in Ninja Tune’s latest compilation “Grime 2.0”, has stretched miles beyond areas like Bow in East London. The new record showcases the latest batch of grime artists from not only the UK, but acts like Gumnaam from Holland, Toronto’s Tre Mission and U.S producer Starkey. There are also tracks from grime vets such as Newham Generals’ Footsie and the “Godfather” himself Wiley. Whoever said that grime was dead had it all wrong. It’s simply expanded.
“Grime 2.0” is out now on Ninja Tune.
