For a while now we’ve been hearing the name of Black Thought’s new emcee group the Money Making Jam Boys from Philadelphia. The group consisting of The Root’s Black Thought, Dice Raw, Truck North, P.O.R.N and S.T.S, have finally come fourth with material in the form of “The Prestige” mixtape. Mixed by Mick Boogie and Terry Urban, “The Prestige” showcases original tracks by various producers including The Root’s ?uestlove and Frank Knuckles as well as the raw emcee skills mixed with a sort of B-Boy swaggered flow from the Philly emcees. While generally it would seem unfair to put any other rapper alongside Black Thought due to his extreme gift as an emcee, it is actually a nice balance to hear all of the rappers together as each member provides a unique approach to each song. Whether it be Truck North’s husky, gutter style delivery, P.O.R.N’s almost “slippery yet nearly psychotic” flow, Dice Raw’s classic “Philly Fresh” appeal or S.T.S’s southern slanged signature and boasts of being “at the 40/40 Club with cougars”, this mixtape is definitely a nice release for those looking for Hip-Hop without any sort of gimmicks, just pure skills and hot beats.
