The Kills are undoubtedly one of our fave bands…ever. Having released their fantastic album God Games back in 2023, the duo have now announced their forthcoming EP Happier Girls Sessions. The record lands September 20th via Domino. The EP will consist of non-electric versions of four previous songs taken from God Games as well as a cover version of Billie Eilish’s 2021 single ‘Happier Than Ever’, which they have shared today. While on the surface, the cover may seem a bit strange, this isn’t the first time The Kills have recorded an unexpected remake. The released a version of Saul Williams’ 2008 song ‘List Of Demands(Reparations)’.
With ‘Happier Than Ever’ The Kills deliver a redo that, at first is quite skeletal before morphing into a fuzzed out rock handing that immediately showcases their signature sound of whipping guitars and lo-fi drum machine programming. Topped with Alison Mosshart’s stellar vocals, this is surely a great teaser for the forthcoming EP.
Touching on the track, The Kills stated:
“It’s all Sirius XM’s fault. We were asked to do an acoustic session with them last year and they’d asked for a cover as part of the session. I’d always really dug ‘Happier Than Ever’ and found myself singing it around the house all the time. It seemed like a good choice, since I loved it and loved singing it. After that radio session hit the airwaves, Laurence Bell from Domino reached out to us enamored with our acoustic version of the song and asked us to do an electric recording. Here we were in London, recording a non-electric EP and what’s the first song on it? An electric cover of the acoustic cover we did… and the more electricity the better. Thank you Billie for writing such a brilliant song!”
