Swedish band Isolated Youth have released their new album miserere mei on Memorials of Distinction and Birthday Productions.
Working with Faris Badwan of The Horrors, miserere mei is a culmination of haunting post-punk, and goth, not to mention injections of indie rock in some songs. Using the backdrop of their Norrtälje hometown as part of the inspiration behind the sonics, this is a brisk, atmospheric, and imaginative offering. Comprised of eleven tracks, the record dives head on into the roots of the genre, with moody rhythms indeed nostalgic yet very steeped in the now. In a way the LP flies the flag for post-punk traditionalism without feeling total constraints of an era. The band flexes their musicality muscles with interludes like ‘en ny dag’, a beautiful piano piece that literally could fall into a mainstream pop category or even post classical. With a sound that feels seasoned, it’s almost hard to fathom that this is the group’s debut. And while fans of acts such as Depeche Mode will be in sheer ecstasy, miserere mei is truly for lovers of rock music period.
