After the announcement was made that Kanye West would be headlining this year’s Glastonbury Festival, a petition created by Neil Lonsdale via Change.org to prevent the performance has reached over 100K signatures.
A short letter which accompanies the petition reads:
“Kanye West is an insult to music fans all over the world. We spend hundreds of pounds to attend glasto, and by doing so, expect a certain level of entertainment.
Kanye has been very outspoken on his views on music….he should listen to his own advice and pass his headline slot on to someone deserving!
Lets prevent this musical injustice now!”
Glastonbury’s Emily Eavis has since responded to the petition by writing an article for The Guardian, in which she points out the parallels to criticisms of the past. Eavis stated, “Every year when we announce who’s playing at Glastonbury there are complaints and often outrage. We’re well used to that.” Writing that Glastonbury’s decisions to add acts such as Jay Z, Beyoncé and Metallica have all been targets of scrutiny, Eavis went on to add that, “We think the story this year should not be: “Why is Kanye coming?” but: “How amazing is it that Kanye is coming?” One of the world’s biggest superstars and a music legend, always interesting, never boring.”
The 2015 Glastonbury Festival is set to take place June 24th – 28th.
