Listening to the music of singer, composer, performer, and Kikimora Records co-founder Rosie Tee is like floating through a cinematic dreamworld. Her sound is atmospheric, it’s otherworldly, it’s non-conformist. Whether more jazz-leaning tunes or cloud drifting avant-pop, experimentation is something that she has played with harking back to her debut EP Heavy Prayers, released back in 2017. Her records at times sound like movie scores, which are attributed to the theatrical elements of her tracks. Her 2019 EP Chambers, along with 2021’s Earth, Embrace Me In all demonstrated a masterclass of how to create an effective amalgamation of styles that all fit perfectly together like one glorious puzzle. And to think, she hasn’t even released a debut full length yet, which would be mammoth in size.
Rosie Tee’s new EP Night Creatures is a six song wonderland of electronica, psych, art pop, jazz and more. While each track is experimental, the production is mountainous, and intricately composed, transporting you consistently with every listen. As detailed as the arrangements are, aside from flaunting her rich vocals, she also uses them like instruments, all making for one incredibly gorgeous, and heavenly record.
For ColoRising Mixes 44, Rosie Tee has curated a lovely and varied playlist which includes tracks from Gazelle Twin, Julia Holter, Dirty Projectors and Björk, and more. Like Rosie Tee’s own music, this selection is an audible journey.
Rosie Tee – “These ten artists have all hugely informed my own music. In their own distinct way they dip and dive in the cracks between genres. It’s not easily placeable music and that’s why I love it. These electronic, psychedelic and hypnotic sounds made by mostly women all deeply resonate with me, and I just keep coming back to them time and time again. I find some comfort in my own music making knowing there are other artists who’ve worked so hard to carve their own path rather than taking the ones already mapped out.”
