A debate that seems to be never-ending in Hip-Hop is the question on whether the new school of rappers are actually doing damage to the culture. Whilst there seems to be a divide between generations, leave it up to Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino to take the current rap flow and add his touch of genius to deliver a single and video titled ‘This is America’. A shirtless Glover gets down and dirty busting dance moves throughout the Hiro Murai-directed vid; that’s of course in between shooting a guitar player and a church choir. The track seems to represent the absurd fascination between money and violence that is currently reflected in the state of Hip-Hop and the mind state of many in America. Glover touches on a number of messages in the video ranging from the chaos that is constantly happening while we continue to be distracted by things like the latest dance moves, etc. to the previous mass shootings that has taken place in various cities throughout America. Donald Glover has definitely presented a finely executed and thought provoking piece of work.
