Funk and soul reworks have been done countless times before. From Hip-Hop sampling to the rare groove explosion in the nineties and even moving on to the dreadful coined term “neo soul”, often times the nostalgia brought back from many of the modern records quickly transformed into boredom as it felt like you have “been there and done that”. French singer Caroline Lacaze understands that sometimes it’s not what you do but how well you do it and does she do it ever so good. Her latest full length recording “En Route” is a walk down the road of soul with a 60’s pop twist that feels joyous like a sunny summer weekend at the beach.
Starting with the up funk, sharp horn stabbing “Soultempo”, Lacaze projects with a stylish swing that airs a unquestionable confidence. Selections like “En Route Madame” and “Ici” may capture an authentic reflection of the soul rainbow but it’s songs like “Laisser Tomber” where the singer shines over upbeat lounge pop fueled rhythms adding a classic French touch that is irresistibly charming. “Road Stop”, a two minute instrumental that embodies surf sounds made popular by acts such as Dick Dale, creates a nice space for welcoming cuts like the psychedelic styled “Minutes D’Insouiciance” and the feel good “Où tu M’Emmènes”.
“En Route” is a fun album that proves that regardless of the language, good music is always the center of importance. With a voice that is captivating, the highly addictive music of Caroline Lacaze keeps you continuously coming back for more.
“En Route” is out April 19th on Mocambo Records / Légère Recordings
