Afrikkanitha’s soulful voice resonates through the ears and minds of music lovers throughout. Combining the elements of Jazz, traditional African rhythms, Soul and more, her latest album titled “Ainda Sonho” emphasizes the dreams of a better world and a better tomorrow. Karelle Rodrigues caught up with the busy Angolan songstress to talk about her beginnings and the new album.
KR-Hello, Tell us how the music came to you and your journey.
A-I already sang and danced at the age of 4 years old! I recited poems at school and I danced in several pop groups, copying Michael Jackson and Madonna, and then I created my own dance group. At 14 I started to write poems and created a magazine that talked about girls, but still being very young, we did not take it seriously. I was never encouraged to make music, the priority was for studies, so I started trying journalism school and eventually studied languages. With the support of my mother, I started looking for my way in music and at 18 I took singing lessons at the church. I met God and to this day, I have done it ever since. I continued to sing in the choir, until I became professional and today I take some (time) when I’m available to return on Sunday to sing the Mass with the church pianist.
KR-What were your inspirations?
A-I was inspired by Madonna, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, ect… until I discovered my own voice. I then turned to Anita Baker and Tony Braxton, Ella Fitzegerald. Jazz is now back in my life and have lived in me ever since. I write all of my songs and I interpret songs from other artists that I enjoy.
KR-Talk about your album.
A-My first album is called “Weza”, it’s Kimbundo, a native of Angola. It means “Arrived”, because it took me over 3 years (to make) the record; I had no money to do so. Simmons, my husband, played all the instruments and my sound engineer Cyril helped me financially for the studio. It was finally released in 2007 thanks to several sponsors of Angola.
It is a mixture of jazz with soul, rock and African rhythms. I sing in English and in several African languages. I’m Afrikkanitha, “That which comes from Africa”, and no matter the country, I’m Angolan but I always say that I am also from Mali and Senegal. We are one people! This album was distributed only in Angola but will be distributed even more widely (globally) soon!
I did a few tours and thousands of concerts in Angola and I (also) have my jazz program. This album is still not sold in France, but I work with Cheick Tidiane Seck (Mali producer) who invited me to do some shows there with him. We have projects together that will allow for me to shoot in France. In addition, I just finished my second album called “Ainda Sonho” which means “I still dream.” This album talks about the problem of world hunger. There are people who have so much more and some that has nothing at all, and nobody can solve this problem. I talk a lot about love, something that I have not made with the first album. I was talking about social problems. This second album will be released in April/May in Angola, Brazil, France and Portugal and we will continue with the distribution for Latin America, Africa and other countries if possible. KR-Bonjour, raconte nous comment la musique est veue à toi, ton parcours.
A-Je chantais et dansais dejà à l’age de 4 ans! J’ai recité des poemes a l’ecole et ai dansé dans plusieurs groupes de pop, en copiant Michael Jackson et Madonna, et j’ai ensuite crée mon propre groupe de dance. A 14 ans j’ai commencé a ecrire des poemes et crée un magazine qui parlait des filles, mais etant encore très jeune, on ne me prenait pas au serieux. On ne m’a jamais encouragé pour la musique, la priorité etait pour les etudes, alors j’ai commencé à essayer une ecole de journalisme, pour finir par etudier les langues. Avec le soutien de ma mère, j’ai pu commencé à chercher ma voie dans la musique et à 18 ans j’ai pris des cours de chant a l’eglise. J’ ai rencontré Dieu, et jusqu’a ce jour, je ne l’ai plus jamais quitté.
J’ai continué à chanter dans la chorale, jusqu’a que je devienne professionnelle, et je profite aujourd’hui de mes quelques dimanche de disponibilité pour retourner chanter pour la messe avec le pianiste de l’eglise .
KR-Quelles ont ete tes inspirations?
A-Je me suis inspiré de Madonna, Withney Houston, Mariah Carey… jusqu’a ce que je decouvre ma propre voix. Je me suis ensuite tourné vers Anita Baker et Tony Braxton, Ella Fitzegerald. Le jazz est rentré dans ma vie et vis en moi depuis. J’ecrit toutes mes chansons et j’interprete aussi des morceaux d’autres artistes que j’apprecie.
KR-Parlez de votre album.
A-Mon premier album s’appelle “Weza”, en Kimbundo, une langue maternelle de l’Angola. Cela veut dire “Arrived”, car il m’a fallu plus de 3 ans pour l’enregistrer, je n’avais pas d’argent pour le faire.
Simmons mon mari, a joué tous les instruments, et mon ingenieur du son Cyrille m’a arrangé financierement pour le studio. Il est finalement sorti en 2007, grace à quelques sponsors angolais. C’est un melange de jazz avec de la soul, de rock et de ritmes africans. Je chante en anglais et dans plusieurs langues africaines.
Je suis Afrikkanitha ” Celle que vient de l’Afrique” et peut importe le pays, je suis angolaise mais je me dit toujours que je suis aussi du Mali ou du Senegal. Nous sommes un seul peuple! Cet albun a été distribué seulement en Angola mais va etre distribué beaucoup plus largement (mondialement) bientot!
J’ai fait quelques tournées et beaucoup de concerts en Angola, et j’ai mon programme de jazz. Cet album n’est toujours pas commercialisé en France, mais je travaille avec Cheick Tidiane Seck (producteur malien) qui m’a invité pour faire quelques concerts avec lui. On a des projets ensemble qui me permettront de tourner en France. De plus, je viens de finir mon 2eme album que s’appel “Ainda Sonho” = ” I still dream”. Cet album parle du probleme de la famine dans le monde, il y a des gens qui ont tellement, d’autres qui n’ont rien du tout, et personne n’arrive a resoudre ce probleme. Je parle aussi beaucoup de l’Amour, chose que je n’ai pas faite sur le premier album, j’y parlais plus des problemes sociaux. Ce deuxieme album sortira en Avril/Mai en Angola, Brésil, France et Portugal, et on pousuivra avec la distribution pour l’Amerique latina, l’Afrique et d’autres pays si cela est possible.
