Releasing their fantastic creeping speedwells EP last year, London’s deep tan kicks off the new year with a new track titled ‘beginners’ krav maga’.
Continuing their onslaught of punk-funk magic, this time the trio touches on violence against women and the idea that they should have to learn to constantly physically defend themselves just to feel safe whilst out and about. deep tan places the emphasis on the people perpetuating the acts and what needs to be done to stop it. Like true masterminds, the trio use upbeat and funky instrumentation to balance the heaviness of the topic.
Touching on the song, deep tan mentioned:
“‘beginners’ krav maga’ is a response to the idea that women should take self defense classes in order to feel safe on the street at night. Women shouldn’t have to. Yet it seems like every day there’s a new Sarah Everard, Sabina Nessa or Aisling Murphy. Educate your sons, brothers, guy friends. Male violence against women is an epidemic and it needs to stop, so we made a pop song to talk about it.”
