Over 14 years and D’Angelo’s long-awaited third LP Black Messiah is finally here! Comprised of tweleve tracks, the new album perfectly picks up where Voodoo left off, adding a more charged political undertone, racey guitars and D’Angelo’s signature melodies and back vocals. Backed by his band The Vanguard, D’Angelo handles the bulk of the production along with extra contributions from Questlove, Pino Palladino and James Gadson.
Guests got the chance to preview the new album last night at the Black Messiah listening party in New York City, not long before the LP went on sale via iTunes. You can now stream the album in full on Spotify.
After giving Black Messiah a careful listen (more than once), all we can say so far is that D’Angelo undoubtedly continues to wear the crown of modern soul. And sure there have been a slew of artists that have emerged with an almost 15 year period, but it is also evident that in some shape or form, that many have borrowed from D’Angelo’s book of music. From funk and soul, down to blues, gospel, Hip-Hop and rock, D has pretty much done it all…and might we say EFFORTLESSLY.
Once again, Black Messiah is HERE!
