Liverpool promoters Freeze will mark another hugely influential milestone in their history in August when they will be collaborating with the city’s council as part of the Liverpool International Music Festival, the successor to the iconic Matthew Street Festival and the defining point in the city’s musical calendar. Freeze has spent seven years re-imagining the typical club space, taking the fairly limited focus of electronic music within a standard venue to new and uncharted heights, and this latest move sees them consolidate that reputation further.

Deeply involved with the fabric of the city they are from, they’ve focused on showcasing the heritage and the strength in depth of Liverpool’s architecture and social history. The venues selected represent this passion; The Williamson Tunnels nods to the industrial ingenuity of the Victorian era, St Georges Hall the aristocratic splendour of the same period, Liverpool Cathedral defining the city’s deep and spiritual conscience and then St Luke’s Church, arguably the ultimate icon of Liverpool’s durability and strength in the face of adversity.

As well as providing awe-inspiring backdrops to experience music in, these buildings possess a linear focus of the city’s utterly beguiling personality. This latest alliance sees them consolidate that even further, with a headline turn from legendary ‘Madchester’ band The Charlatans in St Georges Hall. The band, led by music’s most charismatic frontmen in Tim Burgess, were held by many as the missing link between the baggy era of Manchester and the Britpop renaissance.

Exploding with the indie dance classic ‘The only one I know’ in 1990, they went on to secure the top spot in the UK Album charts with 3 of their 11 studio releases, ensnaring four top ten singles along the way. This is the rescheduled show for the event after the tragic passing of drummer Jon Brookes in August.

Joining them are local legends in the making The Tea Street Band, whose fusion of dance with the swagger of classic rock has drawn parallels with the Stone Roses (and of course, the Charlatans), alongside Wirral reared purveyors of joy By the Sea and Ellesmere Port’s finest The Fallows.

The concert room of the venue will also be utilised at the event as a chance to focus on up and coming music, with local promoters Cooking Soup invited to showcase a wide variety of live music. There will be performances from Deadbeat Echoes, Regency, The Bibelots Psyence, Welcome Pariah, Violet Class, Wilson Minds and Barnie Soanes.
