Fatboy Slim’s career was celebrated at the IMS Legends Dinner held at Cipriani’s in Ibiza this past weekend. Multiple industry stars including Iggy Pop, David Byrne, Idris Elba and Carl Cox all gave appreciation to Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim whose career spans almost 30 years. “”It was a real honour to be the recipient of the IMS Legends Award for 2013. To follow in the footsteps of Carl Cox and Pete Tong is a big statement, two of my favourite contemporaries in the DJ world. Pete and IMS put on a very special evening for me. All a bit overwhelming!” says Cook.
Norman Cook began his career in 1985 as a member of the band The Housemartins. The group experienced a number 1 hit record with their cover of Isley-Jasper-Isley’s “Caravan of Love”. In 1989, he began recording as a solo artist releasing “Blame It on the Bassline” featuring MC Wildski. Over the years, Cook had formed various collectives and groups such as Beats International, Freak Power and The Mighty Dub Katz but it would have been in 1996 when, under the name Fatboy Slim, he released his groundbreaking album “Better Living Through Chemistry”.
Fatboy Slim’s second album “You Come a Long Way, Baby”, released in 1998 went 3x Platinum in the UK and Platinum in the US. The LP reached number one in the UK charts. He also enjoyed chart success with various singles released from the album.
In 2000, Fatboy Slim released his third album “Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars” which included various collaborations with more mainstream acts such as Macy Gray and funk master Bootsie Collins yet also featured respected house producer Roger Sanchez. The album’s lead single “Sunset (Bird of Prey), which contained Jim Morrison samples, made it in the top ten of the charts in the UK.
Fatboy Slim went on to release the album “Palookaville” in 2004 and “Here Lies Love” with David Byrne in 2010.
With an extensive list of remixes, Fatboy Slim’s work includes reworks for The Rolling Stones, Beastie Boys, Groove Armada, Prince, Timo Maas, A Tribe Called Quest, Missy Elliot and the list goes on.
Having an extremely successful career that has taken him around the world and has enabled him to work with some of the most groundbreaking and notable artists in the music business, the award giving to Fatboy Slim at the IMS Legends Dinner was indeed justified.
