The Soul Immigrants “The Ghetto (There’s No Way Out)”

DR45001 - The Soul Immigrants 45 label

Raw soul and funk isn’t dead, far from it. Unquestionably it’s breathing full life down in Brixton thanks to The Soul Immigrants. Forming in 1992, the band continues to fly the soul, jazz and funk flag proudly in the spirit of the legends who Emrys Baird grew up listening to. Their latest single “The Ghetto (There’s No Way Out)” is an unapologetic, furious dose of down home, gritty funk with a reality check of the difficulties of escaping the urban trap. The b-side “Sunk Without The Funk” doesn’t let off one minute from the where “The Ghetto” ends, yet actually picks up harder. Letting off fast rhythms with blaring horns, it would be quite hard to imagine that a record with so much authenticity was made in this present day. It’s the sound that crate diggers would have spent months scowling through dusty bins and shops to find, gleaming at the discovery. The Soul Immigrants “The Ghetto (There’s No Way Out)” is a solid effort by a band that refuses to take back seat to any trend and the music is so true to the origins that it’s well worth the price to purchase it on vinyl if possible.

The Soul Immigrants “The Ghetto (There’s No Way Out)” is out now on Dry Rooti Records.
