On Saturday 25th January 2014, Memory Box turns 1 year young with celebrations coming from legendary club culture heroes A Guy Called Gerald and 808 State! In its inaugural year, Memory Box has captured and celebrated defining moments in the last few decades of electronic music. Delving deep into its rich history, Memory Box trawls the archives to produce a broad selection of sonic memoirs.

Heading to Plan B in Brixton for the first birthday, Memory Box celebrates one of the most acknowledged sub-genres of our generation, Acid House. With one of the most iconic names in dance music, A Guy Called Gerald on the bill with old band mates and revolutionaries from the late 80’s 808 State Soundsystem, both digging through their crates to play specially crafted sets showcasing the defining movement known as Acid House. One of the most exciting UK electronic artists of recent time, Saytek will bridge the gap between old and new with a special Memory Box live show of oldskool Detroit, Chicago and acid inspired material. While Memory Box creator Robin Ball lights the birthday candles with a warm up of acid-tinged electronica.

As A Guy Called Gerald muses: “This will be my journey of music starting with the drum. There will be one minute of silence before the show so I can contact my ancestors. I’ll be taking you from the jungles of Africa, to the music of slavery, to the music of Jamaica, to the automated cold grey music of the industrial era. I’m going to take you from the soul to the coal.”
Previous explorations through the Memory Box have heard Tom Middleton giving a history class on the Roland 808, Altern-8’s Mark Archer playing his warehouse rave classics, Rennie Pilgrem playing an old skool breaks set, Justin Robertson on a classic acid house tip, and Jerome Hill spinning old skool techno. Upcoming parties include Shades of Rhythm hosting the Memory Box Christmas Party and February’s party dives deep into a History of Bass with Pinch, Plastician and Altern-8.

Memory Box creator Robin Ball says “A Guy Called Gerald is the perfect guest for our 1st birthday. He encapsulates everything Memory Box parties are about. Steeped in electronic music history and yet still breaking down musical boundaries, ‘Voodoo Ray’ has become the Memory Box anthem. Whether its a night of straight up retro fun at a Memory Box Social or a serious musical Memory Box moment, that track always grips the dance floor then makes it explode! And on a personal tip Gerald’s ‘Emotion Electric’ is one of my all time favourites! It melts my soul.”
