After the success of last year’s tour, FoolishPeople have announced that they will be transforming more of the UK’s oldest and best-loved independent cinemas into the dark and disturbing world of ‘Strange Factories’: an immersive, theatrical and cinematic journey that places the audience at the heart of a haunted feature film.

The film tells the story of a writer, Victor who awakens alone having fled a mysterious fire that consumed a theatre with his band of performers, and becomes obsessed by his unfinished story. He journeys into dreamlike places, all the while haunted by visions from the infamous hum of the Strange Factory. Upon finding his troupe under the wing of an aristocratic noble, he learns of the enigmatic Stronheim, who offers to rebuild Victor’s theatre, so long as he finds the ending to his story…

You are invited to join a secret society- The Imaginari to witness Stronheim’s film unravel, watch its characters come to life around you and lose yourself in the madness of haunted cinema.

FoolishPeople create and engineer immersive events, theatre, collaborative live art, books and film.
Over a number of years, we have developed a practice Theatre of Manifestation that transforms entire buildings into dreamlike worlds that living characters inhabit.
Our work has been commissioned by organisations such as the BBC, Secret Cinema, Arcola Theatre and the Institute of Contemporary Arts.

‘Strange Factories’ is a unique and powerful project that fuses cinema with a dreamlike environment to create an immersive experience like no other.

Exploring the visions, obsessions and powers of the creative urge, the film takes inspiration from the earliest traditions of cinema and film in the touring traditions of Phastasmagoria and Theatre Arcana. The film was crowd funded via IndieGoGo, produced by FoolishPeople and mainly shot in the Czech Republic.

Blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction, the ‘Strange Factories’ team lived for a month on their own film set, entirely cut off from society and often with no means of transport other than an antique wheelbarrow.
To date, ‘Strange Factories’ has toured to Cinema Museum, London, Duke of Yorks Picturehouse in Brighton, Bournemouth Pavilion Dance & Hitchin Lavender, Cadwell Farm, Hitchin featuring cast members from the feature film. It is also available to purchase via VHX.
